Start Somewhere: Kimlea Celebrates a New Generation of Hospitality Professionals

On 18 September, Kimlea College was filled with joy, pride and the unmistakable feeling that something new was beginning. It was graduation day.

Families, friends, faculty, partners and members of the Kimlea community gathered to celebrate a group of young women who had worked hard, learned new skills and grown in confidence as they prepared to take their next steps into the world of hospitality.
It was a beautiful day, but beyond the celebrations, certificates and photographs was something much bigger: the recognition of possibility.
“Start somewhere. Don’t wait to be invited to the table. Make yours.”
Our Chief Guest, the Head Chef at Fig & Olive, one of Kimlea’s valued industry partners, left the graduates with a powerful message:
“Start somewhere. Don’t wait to be invited to the table. Make yours.”
Her words captured the spirit of what Kimlea hopes to instil in every student.
The hospitality industry is built on skill, service, creativity and people. But building a career also requires courage. Sometimes the opportunity will not arrive in the form we expect. Sometimes there will be no invitation. And sometimes the first step is simply having the confidence to begin.
For our graduates, that first step may look different for each of them.
For one, it may be walking into her first professional kitchen. For another, joining a hotel, restaurant or catering company. For another, starting a small food business from home and slowly building it into something bigger.
Whatever their path, they leave Kimlea knowing that their skills have value and that they have something to offer.
From the classroom to the world
At Kimlea, hospitality training goes beyond learning how to prepare food or serve a guest.
Our students are equipped with practical skills, discipline, professionalism and the confidence to work in an industry where excellence matters.
Through hands-on training and partnerships with leading hospitality establishments, students are exposed to the realities of the workplace and the standards expected in the industry.
These partnerships matter because they help bridge the gap between training and employment. They give students opportunities to learn from professionals, understand the industry and begin imagining themselves as part of it.
Our partnership with Fig & Olive is part of this wider commitment to connecting our students with the hospitality industry and creating pathways for them to grow.
A celebration of more than certificates
Graduation is often described as the end of a journey.
At Kimlea, we see it differently.
It is a beginning.
Behind every certificate is a story of effort, sacrifice, early mornings, practical lessons, challenges overcome and dreams that refused to be put aside.
For many of our students, education is not simply about acquiring a qualification. It is about gaining the tools to build a dignified future for themselves and their families.
That is why days like this matter.
As the graduates stepped forward to receive their certificates, they were not only being celebrated for what they had completed. They were being reminded of what they are capable of becoming.
The table is waiting
The hospitality industry will continue to evolve. New restaurants will open. Hotels will grow. New food businesses will emerge. And new opportunities will be created.
Our graduates now have an opportunity to be part of that future.
And perhaps the most important lesson from this year's graduation was not simply to wait for an opportunity.
Start somewhere.
Learn. Show up. Keep growing.
And when there is no seat at the table, remember the words shared with our graduates:
Don't wait to be invited to the table. Make yours.
Congratulations to the Kimlea Class of 2026.
May you walk boldly into every room, carry your skills with confidence and create opportunities not only for yourselves, but for those who will come after you.
Your journey is just beginning.
